Overview
Adafruit AMG8833 IR Thermal Camera Breakout is based on Panasonic’s Grid-EYE sensor and provides an 8x8 array of infrared thermal pixels for non-contact temperature sensing. Over I2C, it returns 64 individual temperature readings that can be used to detect heat patterns, build a simple presence detector, or create a mini thermal camera.
The sensor measures object temperatures from 0°C to 80°C with typical accuracy of ±2.5°C and supports frame rates up to 10Hz. It can detect a human from up to 7 meters away, making it useful for occupancy sensing, motion-triggered thermal projects, robotics, and interactive installations.
This breakout is designed for easy integration, with onboard 3.3V regulation and level shifting so it can work with both 3V and 5V microcontrollers or computers. It also includes STEMMA QT connectors for quick no-solder I2C connections and is compatible with SparkFun Qwiic. QT cable is not included.
Applications
This breakout is a practical choice for thermal occupancy sensing, simple people detection, gesture or heat mapping experiments, robotics, HVAC monitoring, and low-resolution thermal imaging. On Raspberry Pi, the 8x8 data can also be interpolated in software for a smoother thermal display.
