Overview

The Adafruit TCRT1000 Reflective Photo Interrupt Sensor – STEMMA is a plug-and-play reflective IR sensor designed for fast object detection, line tracking, and proximity sensing in robotics and embedded projects. Built around the reliable TCRT1000 infrared reflective sensor, it emits IR light and detects reflections from nearby surfaces, allowing your microcontroller to instantly detect when an object is present.

Unlike bare reflective sensors that require resistors and breadboard wiring, this breakout comes fully assembled and ready to use. Simply supply 3–5V power and read the digital signal output. When no reflection is detected the signal stays HIGH, and when IR light reflects back from an object the signal drops LOW—making it easy to interface with Arduino, Raspberry Pi, micro:bit, and other development boards.

An onboard potentiometer lets you adjust the IR emitter brightness to tune sensitivity and detection distance for different surfaces and environments. The board also includes status LEDs for quick visual feedback—a green LED indicates power and a red LED lights when the sensor detects reflection.

With its STEMMA JST-PH connector, this sensor connects quickly without soldering, making it perfect for rapid prototyping and robotics projects.

Pinout

Pin / Component Description
VIN Power input for the sensor board. Connect to the same voltage as your microcontroller logic level (typically 3V–5V).
GND Common ground for both power and signal.
SIG Digital output signal from the TCRT1000 sensor. The output is HIGH when no reflection is detected and LOW when IR light is reflected back to the sensor.
STEMMA JST-PH Connector 3-pin JST-PH (2.0mm pitch) STEMMA connector for quick plug-and-play connection.
STEMMA GND Ground connection through the JST cable (black wire).
STEMMA VIN / V+ Power input through the JST cable (red wire).
STEMMA SIG / In Signal output to the microcontroller through the JST cable (white wire).
Potentiometer Adjusts the brightness of the IR emitter to control sensitivity. Turning down reduces current (~10mA) and sensitivity; turning up increases current (~100mA) and detection sensitivity.
Signal LED (Red) Lights up when the sensor detects reflected IR light from an object.
Signal LED Jumper Back-side jumper labeled Sig. Cut the trace to disable the signal LED.
Power LED (Green) Indicates that the board is powered.
Power LED Jumper Back-side jumper labeled On. Cut the trace to disable the power LED.
