Overview

Adafruit MLX90640 IR Thermal Camera Breakout brings affordable heat sensing to embedded and Raspberry Pi projects. The sensor provides a 24x32 thermal pixel array, giving you 768 individual infrared temperature readings over an I2C interface.

This version uses a 55° x 35° field of view, making it a better fit when you want a narrower scene and more focused thermal coverage than the wide-angle variant. It can measure target temperatures from -40°C to 300°C, with quoted accuracy of ±2°C in the 0-100°C range.

The breakout includes onboard 3.3V regulation, logic level shifting, and SparkFun qwiic compatible STEMMA QT connectors for easy solderless I2C hookup. It works with 3V or 5V microcontrollers and computers, with example code available for Arduino-compatible boards and Raspberry Pi Python projects. QT cable not included.

The MLX90640 reads data twice per frame in a checker-board pattern. A slight checker-board dither effect during motion is normal and becomes much less noticeable when the scene changes slowly.
