USB to 5.5mm / 2.1mm DC Booster Cable - 12V Output is an easy way to power 12V devices from a standard USB power source. The cable has an integrated boost converter that steps a 5V USB input up to a 12V DC output on a center-positive barrel plug.
It is designed for equipment that uses a 5.5mm / 2.1mm DC barrel jack, making it useful for small routers, LED gear, development setups, and other low-power 12V devices that you want to run from a computer USB port, USB battery pack, or similar source.
Important: this is a boost cable for moderate loads, not a high-power supply. It is rated for 500mA output. Higher loads up to 700mA were tested, but with voltage droop, so continuous operation at that level is not recommended.
Technical details for this USB to 12V booster cable are listed below.
| Input | USB port |
|---|---|
| Output | 12V DC |
| Barrel Plug | 5.5mm / 2.1mm DC barrel plug |
| Polarity | Center-positive |
| Rated Output Current | 500mA |
| Tested Peak Load | 700mA with voltage droop |
| Typical Efficiency | About 85% at low current, dropping to about 80% at higher current |
| Quiescent Current | 3mA |
| Output Load | Output Voltage | Input Current | Efficiency |
|---|---|---|---|
| 200mA | 12.3V | 570mA in | 86% |
| 300mA | 12.2V | 870mA in | 84% |
| 500mA | 12.1V | 1500mA in | 81% |
| 700mA | 11.4V | 2140mA in | 75% |
The barrel connector uses a standard 2.1mm opening with spring contacts for the center terminal, intended for use with 2.1mm jacks. Always verify that your device requires 12V DC with center-positive polarity before connecting.
Real-world performance depends on the quality of the USB source and cable. USB port voltage can droop under load, and thin or high-resistance cables can add further losses, especially at higher current draw.
This cable is best suited for lower-power 12V equipment where convenience matters. If your device has a higher startup surge or needs sustained current above the rated output, use a dedicated 12V power supply instead.
It converts power from a USB port to a 12V DC output through a 5.5mm / 2.1mm barrel plug. It is meant for 12V devices that use a center-positive DC jack.
This cable uses a 5.5mm outer / 2.1mm inner DC barrel plug with center-positive polarity. The plug is designed for standard 2.1mm jacks.
You can power it from a USB source such as a computer USB port or a battery pack. Actual performance depends on how well the USB source can hold 5V under load.
It is rated for 500mA output at 12V. Testing showed it could go up to about 700mA with some voltage droop, but continuous use near 700mA is not recommended.
USB input current rises with the 12V load: about 570mA in at 200mA output, 870mA in at 300mA output, and 1500mA in at 500mA output. At 700mA output, it was measured at about 2140mA in with output dropping to 11.4V.
The measured output was slightly above 12V at lighter loads and drooped as current increased. Examples given are 12.3V at 200mA, 12.1V at 500mA, and 11.4V at 700mA.
