Circuit Playground Express is a beginner-friendly development board designed to make electronics and programming easier to start and more rewarding to grow with. It builds on the original Circuit Playground Classic with more onboard sensors, broader software support, and a layout that works well for classroom learning, rapid prototyping, and creative interactive projects.
One of its biggest strengths is flexibility. The same board supports Microsoft MakeCode, JavaScript, code.org CS Discoveries, CircuitPython, and Arduino IDE, so you can begin with block-based coding and later move to Python or low-level embedded development without changing hardware.
The round board includes alligator-clip friendly pads around the edge, so you can get started without soldering or sewing. Plug it in over MicroUSB to program and debug, then power it from USB, a AAA battery pack, or a LiPoly battery for portable projects.

Note: the onboard speaker is intended for simple beeps, tones, and alerts rather than high-volume audio playback.
The same board supports Microsoft MakeCode, JavaScript, code.org CS Discoveries, CircuitPython, and Arduino IDE. This makes it suitable for beginners starting with blocks as well as users moving to Python or low-level embedded programming.
No. It has alligator-clip friendly pads around the board, so you can begin building simple projects without soldering or sewing.
It can be powered from USB, a AAA battery pack, or a LiPoly battery. The board also has a MicroUSB port for programming and debugging.
It includes 10 mini NeoPixels, a LIS3DH triple-axis accelerometer, temperature sensor, light sensor, MEMS microphone, mini speaker, two push buttons, a slide switch, and infrared transmit/receive. These built-in features make it useful for interactive learning and rapid prototyping without adding many external parts.
The board offers 8 alligator-clip friendly input/output pads, along with I2C, UART, analog input, and PWM support. Seven pads can work as capacitive touch inputs, and one remaining pad supports true analog output.
It uses an ATSAMD21 ARM Cortex M0 processor running at 3.3V and 48MHz. It also includes 2MB of SPI flash storage, used primarily with CircuitPython for code and libraries.
