Adafruit SCD-40 is a photoacoustic true CO2 sensor breakout designed to measure ambient carbon dioxide directly in PPM, while also providing temperature and humidity readings. Unlike VOC-based eCO2 sensors, the SCD-40 measures actual CO2 concentration rather than estimating it from other gases.
This version is based on the Sensirion SCD-40 and is intended for indoor and outdoor air quality monitoring, ventilation studies, environmental sensing, and lab or maker experiments. Compared with the larger SCD-30, it uses a different sensing technique that allows for a much smaller sensor element while maintaining similar overall data quality.
The board communicates over I2C, making it easy to use with microcontrollers and microcomputers. It is built in the STEMMA QT form factor with connectors on both sides, so you can plug it in quickly, make solderless connections, or chain it with other compatible STEMMA QT and SparkFun Qwiic devices.

The breakout is designed for straightforward I2C integration and clean power delivery. A low-ripple, quiet supply is recommended for best performance.

This breakout works with a wide range of Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and other I2C-capable development boards. Supplier documentation notes support for Arduino as well as Python and CircuitPython, making it a good fit for both embedded and single-board computer projects.
Advanced users can modify back traces to change regulator behavior and I2C logic level configuration if needed.
It measures true ambient CO2 directly using photoacoustic sensing. Unlike VOC-based eCO2 sensors, it does not estimate CO2 from other gas readings.
The SCD-40 provides CO2, temperature, and humidity readings. Its specified CO2 measurement range is 400 ppm to 2000 ppm.
It uses an I2C digital interface with default address 0x62, so it works with I2C-capable microcontrollers and microcomputers. The breakout also has STEMMA QT connectors that are compatible with SparkFun Qwiic for easy solderless wiring and chaining.
The breakout can run from 3.3V to 5V. Adafruit notes that a quiet, low-ripple power supply is especially important for best sensor performance.
The specified CO2 accuracy is ±(50 ppm + 5% of reading). Current consumption is listed as 17 mA at a 5 second measurement rate or 0.5 mA at a 5 minute measurement rate.
The SCD-40 is the lower-range, lower-cost variant intended for indoor and outdoor air quality and CO2 measurement, with a 400 to 2000 ppm range. The SCD-41 extends the range to 400 to 5000 ppm and has a tighter stated accuracy of ±(40 ppm + 5% of reading).
